Brandon Han; HIP 2024
"With regards to the overall HIP experience, I will say the internship was phenomenal. As a biology enthusiast who did not possess a lot of prior laboratory experience, the HSCI Internship Program gifted me with the opportunity to work with extremely empathetic and kind professionals that shared with me their expertise and intriguing projects. During my two month experience, the salient lesson I learned was the importance of asking questions. Asking questions in a classroom setting helps augment your learning, confirming whether you comprehend or grasp specific concepts and bits of information. But in a laboratory environment, the quality of being inquisitive goes into the depths of innovation and exploration; questions become an attempt to discover something new. Working on a project with postdocs allowed me to witness and ask questions of my own. I found it incredible to see cutting-edge laboratory procedures that I learned from a textbook be applied in front of my eyes; yet, I also experienced the rigor and grit that is attributed to a career in biology, and this thrill has only pushed me further in my desire to become a researcher. I am excited to seek more opportunities at my home institution with respect to research, but I am certain that I would like to continue collaborating with the Scadden Lab after my enjoyable time over the summer.
Beyond the research aspect, the other HIP interns have been incredible friends that I will continue reaching out to in the future. I have met some amazing and creative people that share and even advance my own aspirations, and I am really excited to see where their journey takes them.“
We are also pleased to announce that Brandon was accepted into the Canary CREST Program at Stanford University, and studied pediatric oncology with Dr. Kara Davis during summer 2025.
