A key challenge for translational efforts for nervous system disorders has been the development of animal and cellular models that appropriately model disease mechanisms and the complex biology of the human nervous system. With the advances in neurogenetics, we now have long lists of candidate genes for complex disorders such as schizophrenia and autism, but the path from genes to mechanisms has been more challenging. In recent years, new technologies in human-stem-cell-based approaches have come onto the scene as a potential breakthrough to surmount these translational hurdles. In the second of our series of webinars focused on translational neuroscience, we focus on the potential of groundbreaking pluripotent stem cell technologies to model “human” disease pathology and to serve as platforms for drug development.
