Center for Regenerative Medicine - Massachusetts General Hospital

The Center for Regenerative Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and capable individual for a Research Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Harald Ott at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. This position provides excellent opportunities for continued scientific development, and for contribution to pioneering new technologies in tissue and organ engineering research with high potential for translational impact. It is suited for a dedicated individual wishing to contribute to interdisciplinary research at the interface between basic research and experimental transplantation in a dynamic laboratory environment.

The research in the Ott Laboratory / Laboratory for Organ Regeneration works at the intersection of biology, engineering and transplant surgery to develop novel startegies for organ replacement. The long-term goals of the group are to generate transplantable heart and lung grafts based on acellular matrix scaffolds and patient derived cells, and to generate disease models based on patient derived cells.

The Research Scientist is expected to benefit from the interdisciplinary environment of the Ott Laboratory, the Center for Regenerative Medicine, and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, which combines cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, matrix biology, advanced tissue and organ culture, and transplant surgery, and provides a unique environment for the development of innovative solutions to organ regeneration.

Principal Responsibilities:
- Conduct small and large animal organ procurement, and advanced transplantation experiments
- Collaborate with the PI as an interface between research and administration in a dynamic laboratory environment.
- Work with the PI to review operational needs of lab activities, and develop and implement intermediate and long-term research goals.
- Assist the PI and lab members in the planning and execution of grant applications and financial strategy for the lab.
- Work with the PI to develop and foster collaborations at MGH, HMS, HSCI, and other institutions.
- Interact daily with other post-docs, graduate students and staff to provide training and guidance in laboratory techniques, experimental design, manuscript and grant writing.
- Monitor progress of projects and suggest improvements to achieve research goals.
- Maintain a current knowledge of biomedical and bioengineering research by reading the literature and attending meetings and interpret diverse scientific information.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in medicine, or biology or bioengineering
- Experience in animal surgery, preferably in orthotopic lung and heterotopic heart transplantation in small and large animal models
- Experience in microsurgical techniques
- Demonstrated verbal and written abilities, including experience writing grants, reports, and developing presentations for large audiences
- Ability to critically review information and readily understand new concepts.
- Ability to develop innovative processes to achieve goals.
- Ability to independently review work activities to continually work towards process improvement.
