Financial Officer
Duties And Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI); provide financial leadership, management, and services to the Institute. Oversee and have ultimate responsibility for all Institute funds including sponsored, unrestricted, gifts, and endowments. Responsible for all phases of the budget process; develop and report on the annual budget, account for variances, forecast financial results, close year-end financials, and create annual operating financial statements. Provide financial analysis as needed for planning and management decision-making. Develop and track recovery from service center rates. Supervise financial support staff. Oversee and actively engage in day-to-day financial operations, including authorize/review transactions, maintain chart of accounts, manage all post-award aspects of federal and non-federal sponsored project financials, and ultimately responsible for HSCI sponsored projects effort reporting. Oversee monthly financial reconciliation, record-keeping and archiving. Responsible for post-award accounting of outgoing HSCI awards. Provide recommendations and resolve financial issues involving allocation of resources, flow of funds, compliance of financial policies, and appropriateness of charging and costing. Ensure the Institute's compliance in accordance with A-21, A-133 and A-110, in addition to FAS and OSP financial policies. Liaison with HUSEC/IFI, FAS, OSP, HMS, Office of Accounting, and Harvard Affiliated Hospitals.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and six years progressive financial management experience.
Additional Qualifications
CPA or MBA strongly preferred and strong preference for financial management experience in a research based academic environment. Substantial and direct experience with enterprise-wide budget preparation, full range of fund accounting and financial reporting. Experience in large financial systems applications required as well as expert level Excel skills. Database reporting-writing is highly desirable. At least 3 years of substantial experience in post-award financial management. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated ability and experience in handling high volume of a diverse range of financial projects under the pressure of deadlines. Must demonstrate ability to work independently, be self-directed, and have supervisory experience.
