A new group is being established at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) to take comprehensive advantage of some of the unique aspects of stem cell biology. The focus will be on establishing novel assays surrounding processes that control stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Our goal is to identify new drug targets to treat a variety of diseases, especially orphan nervous system disorders, such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Huntington's Disease.  However, we anticipate working with other members of the broad HSCI community.

Postdoctoral positions are now available, especially for individuals interested in neuronal development and degeneration to work on projects relating to ALS and Huntington's Disease.  Experiments will be based on the use of differentiated neurons derived from embryonic stem cells.  Studies will range from chemical biology "screens" to discover reagents that alter cell phenotype to disease mechanism exploration facilitated by having large numbers of disease relevant cultured neurons.

A Ph.D. in neurobiology, developmental biology or cell biology is required.  Some familiarity with isolating and engineering mouse ES cell lines and experience with microscope-based (high content) assays are preferred.
