Call for 2007 Nominations: Deadline Friday, September 7, 2007. For more information about the Sternlicht Director's Fund and diabetes research at Harvard, go to the HSCI Winter 2007 Newsletter.

With generous support from the Sternlicht Director's Fund, the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) announces the creation of the “Sternlicht Awards for Graduate Students in Diabetes.”

Awards will be made to Harvard University GSAS students who are working in the field of diabetes-related stem cell research. It is the purpose of the Sternlicht Awards to support young investigators, specifically graduate students, who are identified by their mentors as promising new researchers. As much of the progress in the field of stem cell science will be in the hands of today's graduate students under the leadership of the senior faculty, the Sternlicht Director's Fund and the HSCI are dedicated to the support of these researchers.

Faculty Sponsors must submit nominations for graduate students in their labs whom they would like to be considered for a Sternlicht Award. Each nomination should include a letter of recommendation from the nominating Faculty Sponsor, biosketches for the candidate and sponsor, and GSAS transcript. Faculty Sponsors should indicate in their nomination letter the years of funding requested (two years maximum) and the student's anticipated program completion date. Although nominees must be registered Harvard GSAS students, nominees may be working in a lab at any one of the Harvard-affiliated hospitals or organizations.

Recipients will be selected through a competitive review process; nominations will be reviewed by a Sternlicht Award review committee as convened and chaired by Gordon Weir of the Joslin Diabetes Center. Finalists will be presented to the HSCI Executive Committee for final decision. Selection will be based on the nominee's promise as a researcher in the fields of diabetes and stem cell science.

Awards will support tuition, fees, and stipend. HSCI expects to award up to three Sternlicht Awards in 2007. Recipients will be expected to attend an annual meeting with the donor of the fund to report on their progress. Recipients will be made Affiliates of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and will also be expected to present their progress annually to the HSCI Executive Committee.
