2008 Professional Development for Science Teachers

The Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) is offering a course this summer on stem cell science and its associated technology and ethical issues.  The course is intended for science teachers and curriculum development specialists in grades 6-12 with the goal to excite and to immerse the participants in state of the art science and technology.  The focus will be on the facts of stem cell science and on how to integrate this field into your school’s curriculum.  Teachers will receive 30 Professional Development Credits (PDP) or three (3) Continuing Education Units (CEU) for course completion.

Course details:  

·  Instruction on current state of stem cell science and research
·  Introduction to the technologies used in stem cell research
·  Discussion on ethical and legal implications
·  Bridging and connecting stem cell science to the current classroom curriculum

·  Visits to HSCI laboratories and/or facilities
·  Guest speakers including HSCI faculty
·  Participant debate on stem cell issues with Harvard experts
·  Resources and materials for your classroom

Participants in this course will actively contribute to the development of this course and assist with ongoing evaluation and follow-up.   Participants should be interested in integrating stem cell science into their class or school curriculum.  In order to have participants represent a variety of grade levels and school types, HSCI will select its 2008 participants from interested educators.
