Harvard Stem Cell Institute
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) 2007
Mentor Information
For the third year, HSCI will offer 10 weeks of funded, hands-on research to a select group of talented undergraduates, and also Mentorship experience to motivated HSCI members. Our program has expanded to include interns from outside Harvard, providing students an experience not available at their home colleges.
We encourage HSCI members, particularly Postdocs and Junior faculty, to apply to host a funded student for the summer. (Please ensure your PI supports your application before submitting.) We are pleased to offer added social and networking events for Mentors, in addition to the valuable experience of mentoring a student.
In addition to working with you in the lab, we have extended the non-research component of the Internships. An informal weekly lecture has been designed to provide "Stem Cell and Research Basics" to the interns. The lectures will precede the weekly seminar series, and will complement their scientific and social content. Interns will also be formed into groups responsible for generating an outreach package to convey a specific aspect of stem cell science to the public. As in previous years, the program will culminate with a Symposium at which all interns will present their findings to HSCI members, and the public.
Due to increased interest in the program, the application process for interns has become very competitive. We expect to fund about 30 interns for the summer of 2007.
Please fill out the HSCI Mentor Application and note the dates of the application process below. You will be notified of your match to an intern once they have accepted the position.
Because of the large numbers of applicants and mentors, we cannot provide you with the opportunity of interviewing applicants. Feel free to contact us with questions/comments during the year.
Also, please take the time to design a project for your intern. They aren't just an extra pair of hands. As we wish to maintain the high standards set by previous programs, we request that you describe a specific project for an intern.
