The Smith Family Awards Program for Excellence in Biomedical Research
In 1991, the Smith Family Foundation created a program to identify and support promising junior faculty who are beginning to establish their own laboratories and research programs. Now in its 20th year, the Program has funded 120 scientists for a total of $20 million. Applications may focus on all fields of basic biomedical science. Investigators in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, and engineering) with biomedical research projects are also encouraged to apply.

Funding Period and Award Amount: Dec. 1, 2011 - Nov. 30, 2014; Up to five $300,000 awards at $100,000 per year, inclusive of 5% institutional overhead

Applicant, Project and Geographic Eligibility: Full-time faculty whose first independent appointment began between July 1, 2009 and December 1, 2011; independence is critical. Two applications each from any School or College within a Massachusetts academic institution; two applications from a Massachusetts hospital or free standing nonprofit biomedical research facility; and two applications each from Brown University and Yale University.

Charles H. Hood Foundation Child Health Research Awards Program
The Charles H. Hood Foundation was incorporated in 1942 to improve the health and quality of life for children throughout New England. Today's research projects encompass many disciplines that have contributed to pediatric discoveries while launching the careers of promising junior faculty. The intent of the Award is to support newly independent faculty, provide the opportunity to demonstrate creativity, and assist in the transition to other sources of research funding. Research projects must be relevant to child health.

Hypothesis-driven clinical, basic science, public health, health services research and epidemiology projects. Nonprofit academic, medical or research institutions in New England. United States citizenship or residency is not required.
